The Starfish Project

Financial literacy for all

Why Starfish?

Our project is named after the story of the star thrower by Loren Eiseley

One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said,

“I made a difference to that one.”

Small Actions, High Impact

Many people in Sri Lanka lack basic financial knowledge and are unable to access financial services which lead to financial insecurity and poverty. In return, this leads to poor financial decisions, debt trap and make them victims to the financial frauds

We want to be that boy in the story, We want to educate people, we want to empower them and we want to help as many individuals as possible to come out of poverty and related hardships.

We use "Financial Literacy" as tool to achieve our goals.

Our Mission

Bridging the gap in financial knowledge and skills in Sri Lanka
